Language students visit the MoMa

By Joseph Angelucci

In March 2012, students in the Spanish IV and V and Italian III and IV classes were given the opportunity to visit and experience The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The MoMA is right in the heart of New York City and is a popular destination for tourists, students, and art enthusiasts alike all around the United States and the world. Famous artists from throughout history, such as Diego Rivera and Giorgio DeChirico, are featured here. The purpose of the trip was experience the artists we are studying in our classes and to make for a greater cultural experience.

Having an educational experience outside the classroom truly does enhance the experience and knowledge you gain from a particular class. For example, I found Spanish artists to be more interesting after actually seeing their work in person and having that visual experience. This seems to be a common trend amongst students, as we need to see and interact with the subject for it to really have an impact on us in most cases. I feel as though trips like this will soon become part of almost every class as teachers begin and continue to find new ways to enhance the learning experience, and of course, to keep their students interested at the same time.
