A Knight of Art

By Devon Tabor

“There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.” - Pablo Picasso

In Yellin, Mrs. McTague’s classroom has a banner that reads “Art is in Everything”, and I feel that this is the true essence of art. Without art, life would be... horribly boring, to say the very least. Our government would function out of giant grey buildings, unadorned with the breathtaking murals and sweeping architecture that we know and love. What would the Capitol Building look like without its Neo-Classical facade? Or it's grandiose dome? Our public squares would be void of the awe-inspiring statues and monuments that we see as a testament to our enriched and colorful past. What would the Sistine Chapel be without the ethereal Michelangelo, The Last Judgment? Or what if Walt Disney had never drawn the first draft of the now-iconic Mickey Mouse? Or Van Gogh never painted Starry Night? We can even see art in music. Everywhere, from Beethoven’s stunning symphonies, to Adele holding a note while singing, there is art. We would be nothing without art, because we are art, and art is us.

Earth, without art, would be just ‘Eh.’

Art teacher Ms. Maskaly poses with Rachael Mele, grade 11.
This year marks the 35th official Sterling High School Art show. This is one of the many things that makes Sterling High school truly unique. In its 35 years of existence, the Art Show has survived countless Sterling High budget cuts, recessions, and nationwide economic problems, and still remains strong today. Art is a universal language, which is why it is such a great honor to have such a long-running show grace Sterling’s walls. In the one day that the Art Show aired, many teachers bought their students to go see the show, because it’s a good thing to show this generation the benefits of the arts. We need to show our next generation the arts, because they can be a great addition to our culture as a whole.

Each year awards are given to certain students for their artistic abilities. The awards are broken into 13 distinct categories: foundation, design, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, three-dimensional design, computer graphics, best individual exhibitor, and best in show. In each category, there is a prize for first place, second place, third place, and of course, honorable mention. That’s 52! Can you say ‘a lot of awards’?

Once again, the Art Show didn’t cease to amaze. Although this year the show only ran for one night, unlike the customary week, many people came out to enjoy the many pieces and panels that graced the Old Gym. Children and adults alike enjoyed the show. Generation to generation, people enjoy seeing art from all walks of life.

The 35th Annual Interdistrict Art Show
As you walked in, you were greeted by three pen & ink drawings, titled “The Horse Barn”, “Praying Hands”, and “The Horse Barn at Dobbs’ Farm,” all of which were  graciously donated by artist-in-residence Riccardo Veggian. All three were beautiful, and all proceeds were donated to the causes of Kevin McGuire and Samm Ragone, two Knights who have been affected by different forms of cancer.

One of the annual highlights of the art show is the Board of Education Art Commission piece.  This year, Kellsie Costigan prepared a colored pencil on paper piece entitled "Preparing for The Stage of Life."The subject of the 2012 Art Commission is a visually powerful metaphor that shows actors standing in place behind the curtain as they await their cue to take the stage.   The different costumes represent the variety of vocations and the skills learned through education that enables students to realize their career goals. Kellsie Costigan's use of dramatic shadows and rich colors accented by a filtered spotlight create an intimate anticipation of the exciting  performance that is soon to begin on 'the stage of life."

The class of 2015 was selling water, soda, pretzels, and baskets to raise money for their prom costs. The Band boosters sold many delicious treats and desserts in the halls from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the VFW even made it out! They sold Phillies tickets, and split the earnings of the sales with Sterling.

Sterling’s Silvertones gave an amazing performance at the show, which started at 7:30. Everyone who participated had a great voice, and they had a very nice range of vocals to grace Sterling’s Art Show! Last but not least, the Anime Club made an appearance with their amazing performance. The Anime Club gave a fantastic show of Japanese culture, as well as a wonderful faux sword-fighting display. Their teachings of Japan and its associated culture have enlightened all who came to see their show.

Sophomore Kayla Matteo poses with her work.
As someone who helped set the Art Show up, I can say that I felt that this was a great year for history. Mrs. Maskaly said that she felt that “all the pieces were great,” and I agree to the fullest. The panels were adorned with amazing pieces, the walls hung with many splendid pieces from all the art classes, and the full-length portraits were phenomenal. Every clay sculpture and pot were expertly carved and crafted, and the children poured their hearts into their pieces. People of all ages enjoyed the show, as far as I could see. It was a genuinely nice atmosphere, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As I’ve said before in this article, the Art Show is one of the many things that makes Sterling truly unique. We have a great art program, and I can say from personal experience that our art program has made me decide my path in life. Our Art Show does not fail to disappoint, and this year was no exception.

Men in Black III Doesn't Disappoint

By Laurie Senior
Editor-in-Chief

After ten years, the secret government organization that monitors and controls alien activity on and off the planet Earth, the Men in Black, are back, and this time, back in time.  That was one of the slogans for the new hit movie "Men in Black III," which took opening weekend by storm, becoming the #1 movie of that weekend.  I'll let you know right now that I am an avid fan of these of movies, but that doesn't make me biased; I actually expected this third movie to flop and ruin the whole series for me.  Luckily, I was pleasantly proved wrong.

It starts off in the high-security prison on the moon, Lunamax, where super serial killer, Boris the Animal (or just Boris as he prefers to be called) has been held for over 40 years.  Through an elaborate escape plot, he gets out and vows revenge on agent K for stopping his evil plans and shooting off his left arm (mainly the last one) by going back in time and killing him before that event ever happened all those years ago.  By doing this, the present K (Tommy Lee Jones) ceases to exist, and agent J (Will Smith) goes back in time himself to stop the present Boris from killing the younger K (Josh Brolin).

This is where many people get lost in what I like to call the "Back to the Future" effect, which is obviously based off of the hit 80’s trilogy "Back to the Future." This effect is where people get confused about the theory of time travel and consequently have a hard time comprehending the events of a film.  It is because of this that some people said the movie was horrible.  I felt, however, that "Men in Black III" limited the time travel events and kept it very simple and much easier to follow than other movies.  And if you are a stickler for consistency like me, you'll be glad to know that they kept everything in line with the first two movies.

Other people argued that the movie was not that great because it did not have as many funny parts as the other two.  While this was true, it did not mean that it was void of it, as the humorous parts in it did produce laughs.  What replaced the rest of the comedy was a touching and almost sad twist in the storyline, which still held its sci-fi action/adventure feel.  To me, this was a nice change of pace and the movie succeeded in balancing everything together perfectly.

I went into "Men in Black III" thinking it was going to fail, but I came out praising it even more than I did the first two.  This movie gets four intergalactic stars, if not five, and I recommend it to everyone, especially fans of the series.  For those who experience the "Back to the Future" effect, just keep an open mind and let the story tell itself, and you will definitely get it.

Spring Sports Wrap Up 2012

By Tommy Sheehan

Volleyball:

2012 Boys Volleyball team
The boys’ volleyball team has had an outstanding season with an impressive record of 16-4! Led by first year captains, senior Tyler Egan and senior Anthony Delaura, the team has accomplished their goal in the beginning of the season and is now Division Champs! Mr. Stuart was the head coach and was assisted by Coach Scully and Coach Badey. Both Ryan Shutts and Dylan Lolli have been commended for getting 100 kills and Anthony Delaura for getting 200 assists.  A typical practice usually consists of individual position work, serves, front and back line hits and then an inter-squad scrimmage. The team has done an excellent job this season and won the National Division Championship.

Softball:

2012 Girls Softball Team
The Sterling Softball Team had another amazing season with a very good record of 14-7. The team is coached by Ms. Tallant along with her dad, Josh Tallant, and Mr. Johnson. Coach Marlys and Coach Barringer also help out with the JV and freshman teams. Elected captains, seniors Sydney Allen, Kate Biasi, Amanda Gardiner, and junior Ashley Sims, have done a great job in leading the team throughout the season. The softball team’s season goal was to be competitive in every game and they succeeded. Other goals they had were to win the conference and to go far in the play-offs. Senior Kate Biasi, who is a four year starter, and senior Amanda Gardiner, a three-year starter, have been commended on their hitting and their leadership this year along with the rest of the team for their hard work. An ordinary practice consisted of running and stretching to start, followed by throwing and relays. Then they usually broke off into their positions and did drills for that position. To end practice they usually practiced hitting and bunting. Going forward, the team could be improved by having people step up which they have already started to do. The Softball Team is congratulated on a great season!

Tennis:

2012 Boys Tennis team
The Boy’s Sterling Tennis team had a very successful season this year, where they played some pretty tough teams. The team is coached by Mr. Atene with the help of Mr. McCullough and Mr. Harmer, a former player. The Knights were led by seniors Colin Pierce, Jeff Guadagno, Alex Sabatino, Drew Furniss, and Mitch Pfeiffer to the SJ Group II Quarter Finals with a winning record of 12-7, which is very good considering the other teams in their conference. All of the seniors have been commended for the selflessness and leadership they have shown throughout the season along with their performances. Colin Pierce is commended for playing against the top players in every school in 1st singles, Drew Furniss for doing an unbelievable job at 2nd singles, and Jeff Guadagno for being a rock in the 3rd singles with a very impressive 17-4 individual record. Lastly, the 1st doubles team of Alex Sabatino and Mitch Pfeiffer is congratulated for winning every match but one against one of the top teams in the state! The goal the team had at the beginning of the year was to get better every match and beat everybody in the conference they were supposed to, and the team accomplished both of these goals and had a tremendous season. Looking forward, the team could be improved by having athletes and players play during the off-season because the more you practice the better you will be!

Baseball:

2012 Baseball team
With a record of 20-5, the Sterling Baseball Team had an outstanding season this year claiming a 3rd seed in the play-offs! The team is coached by Coach Hoffman, Coach K, Coach Farr, Coach Worley, and Coach Larry. Coach Reagle, Coach Shaw, and Coach Jones also helped out by coaching the JV team and freshman team. Led by Seniors CJ Hertz, Brett Mealey, Christian Walsh, Eric Teesdale and Ryan Slovenski, the team got off to an amazing start this year and was 7-0 at one point. The team’s goal at the beginning of the season was to get off to a good start and they have certainly done that. After that they set their sights on winning the conference and put themselves in a very good spot to do so. The boys won the Liberty Division.  Baseball practice usually starts with stretching, throwing, individual hitting, and then sometimes an inter-squad game. The entire team was commended on their outstanding season because the success of the season was all a team effort. If they can improve anything going forward, it would be their hitting.  Congratulations to the baseball team!

Lacrosse:

2012 Lacrosse team
The Sterling Lacrosse team had a breakout season this year with an amazing record of 12-6, beating teams that they had never beaten before! This is the best record in the school’s history. The team is coached by Mrs. Claybourn with the help of Coach Locastro, Mr. Claybourn, and Ms. Maunz. At the beginning of the season, the team’s goal was to do better than last year and they have certainly done that and more! The team is led by captains, senior Erica Hoffman and senior Dylann Dreschler, who have been great this year and will be missed greatly next year. The lacrosse team practices usually included running and active stretching followed by skill work. After the skill work they work on game situations and center each practice based on their next opponents. The team is very close and works together well. The entire team has been commended on playing a big role in the success of their season. Erica Hoffman was commended on reaching 100 career goals along with Tori Shinkowitz for reaching an incredible 200 career goals! All Conference award winners were 2nd team goalie Ali Yip and 2nd team midfielder Erica Hoffman. 1st team winners were midfielder Tori Shinkowitz and defender Courtney O’Neill. The Lacrosse team has made great steps in the program!

Golf:

With a record of 5-9 the golf team finished a tough season, but did very good considering they lost 4 senior starters last year. The team is coached by Mr. Yeager with the help of volunteer assistant, John Baker. This season was a rebuilding year for the golf team where their goal was to get better every day, practice with purpose, and play the game of golf the right way. The team definitely accomplished this goal because they improved a lot throughout the season and did very well in their matches. The golf team is a young team that is going to be very good in the years to come with varsity players who are freshman, sophomores, and juniors.  The team was led by captains, Nick Hoffman and Ethan Snyder, who both led by experience and helped out the younger players. Nick Hoffman has been commended for shooting a personal best of 37 on a 9 hole course in a home match. Nick, as a junior, just missed the state qualifier by only one round! A typical golf practice consists of warm ups, chipping drills, putting drills, range drills, and then work on the course. Going forward, the team can improve by people practicing on their own and having fun playing golf!

Boys Track:

Senior Andre' Lopez competes
The Sterling Boy’s track team had an incredible season, finishing with a 10-1 record, which is one of the best, if not the best, in the school’s history.  The team won the Liberty Division, which is quite an impressive feat.  The team is coached by Coach Shepherd with the assistance of Coach Eckmeyer and Coach Matthews. The team was led by captains, Cody Long, Justin Gervasi, Jimmy Daniels, and Frank Miklosey, who all led by example and motivated the rest of the team.  Going into the season, the team had high expectations and wanted to become 2012 Track and Field Champions, and as a group put the work in to do it. The team had to make it through many tough meets, but they accomplished their goal and are 2012 Track and Field Champions! This outstanding accomplishment was a group effort and could not have been done without everybody’s hard work. Athletes that should be commended this season were Cody Long for his leadership and for having some of the fastest 100, 200, and 400 meter times, Malik Waliyyuddin for being one of the fastest high hurdle runners for us this year, and Jimmy Daniels who went undefeated in the 1600 and 3200 meters this year. Justin Gervasi was also commended for his achievements in the 800, and just recently broke the school record which has been there for over 40 years with an incredible time of 1:55. The last person that was commended was Victor Obguie who was a dynamic jumper for the team this year going 20’11” in long jump, 41’8” in the triple jump, and 6’4” in the high jump!

Girl’s Track:

The Girl’s Track Team had a great season with a winning record of 7-4. The team is coached by Mr. McIlvaine, along with Mr. Blumenstein and Ms. Nardiello. At the beginning of the season, the team’s goal was to try and have each individual reach her potential, which they have, and made tremendous strides in many events. A typical track practice starts with a 20-30 minute warm up. Then the throwers complete a set of drills for their specific events, while the runners complete a workout that varies in distance and intensity. After that the hurlers and jumpers do drills for their events. Anyssa Sanchez, Shannon McGowan, Julie Stratton, and Ateera Wyatt have all been commended for their outstanding seasons along with the throwing team of Chanel Jenkins, Brianna Kears, and Shannon Gilligan, who are one of the best throwing teams in the conference. The entire Girl’s Track Team was also recognized for their hard work and their individual improvements. Looking forward to next year, the team could work on staying consistent because their best marks would have gave them a better record than what their record actually shows, but still the Girl’s Track team had a good season!

Students Bid Goodbye to several Retirees

By Chelsea Korn and Paige Glenn

Sterling High School has been privileged enough to call so many dedicated and wonderful teachers their employees over the last fifty-one years. However, we must again say goodbye to several of those teachers this year. Unfortunately, Sterling is saying goodbye to Mrs. White, Mr. Oakley, Mrs. Merlino, and Mr. Belay; all of whom retire this year. These teachers have left a positive impression on our school. First of these retirees is Mrs. White, one of Sterling’s Health, Driver’s Ed, and Physical Education teachers.

Mrs. White

Mrs. Jeanne White, Health and PE Department
Mrs. White has been teaching for 40 years. She first taught at Penn’s Grove High School, and then moved on to teaching at Wayne Hill High School, where Mrs. White was able to also coach basketball and gymnastics and teach dance and archery classes. Many people do not realize that teachers have other interests and passions that lead them into teaching. Mrs. White is a prime example of this. When she was young, she originally wanted to become a dancer. Her mother taught dance, and dance was her original passion. She also had five brothers, and therefore learned to love sports like field hockey and basketball. In high school, Mrs. White had her first experience in a P.E. class, having previously gone to a school that didn’t offer physical education classes.

Mrs. White’s love for dance and sports eventually led her to become a P.E. and Health teacher where she could help young people learn to love sports just like she had. When I asked Mrs. White what the best part of her teaching career was, she simply replied “The kids and my colleagues.” She said many of her colleagues have become life long friends. She went on to say that she has taught thousands of students, and still has special relationships with those students years later. Especially when coaching, Mrs. White says, you are able to get to know your students better. Finally, when I asked Mrs. White what advice she would give to future teachers, she said she would like them to remember to “work hard, be open to students, and stay committed. It’s not easy, as every kid is different, and you should remember to be open to relationships with your students.”

Mr. Oakley

Mr. Rich Oakley, Science Department
When you walk down the science wing at Sterling you’ve probably seen Mr. Oakley once or twice. Mr. Oakley has been a teacher for 20 years, teaching science to high school students. Mr. Oakley always loved science. He said this was the main reason he became a teacher. He loved science and said he wanted to share a passion for science with kids and allow them to see science the same way he does. He says that science is cool because even if you don’t want a career that involves science, it’s still a great hobby. Also many hobbies involve science, and learning about the science behind your favorite hobbies can be very interesting.

When I asked Mr. Oakley what his favorite part of teaching was he answered, “I love seeing a kid when that ‘light bulb’ goes off. It’s when they have the ‘aha’ moment when they’re working and finally understand.” His advice for future teachers would be to make sure the students (and sometimes teachers) understand the basic concepts first. With technology that keeps evolving, it’s easy to get caught up in the technology that you forget the main ideas. As for advice to students, Mr. Oakley says that when you get to college, enjoy yourself, but make sure the work comes first. “You get one shot at it. That’s it,” he says.

He says that college and education in general is a gift, and not everybody is privileged enough to have an education. He told me how he took classes with a couple of men who just came back from Vietnam. He says they were the most impressive students he’s ever seen because they were alive and felt so privileged to get a chance at an education that they were denied. So don’t waste your education, but enjoy it as well. Mr. Oakley is looking forward to many things though now that he’s retired. He says he’s eager to spend time with his grandchildren, go fishing, and build things. He also says he is quite happy to be able to go out to his hammock at one in the afternoon, lie down, and take a nap.

Mrs. Merlino

Mrs. Diane Merlino, Foreign Language Department
Felicidades, Mrs. Merlino!  Mrs. Merlino has been a teacher for 38, spending half of her career here at Sterling.  Her journey began in 1974 as an ESL teacher in the Camden school district, where she worked teaching English to students from Puerto Rico.  After the birth of her son, Mrs. Merlino began working the Camden County Educational Services Commission teaching ESL at private schools for eight years. Mrs. Merlino made the switch to teaching Spanish, briefly at Magnolia Public Schools, and then from 1995 on, here at Sterling.  Mrs. Merlino has also worked as an adjunct professor of Spanish at both Gloucester and Camden County Colleges.

Even though Mrs. Merlino is looking forward to her retirement, she will really miss the daily interaction with her students.  She says, “I have really enjoyed the students over the years. I will miss the colleagues that I worked with. This will actually be the first year not going to school whether it was teaching or learning, considering that I have gone to school from September to June since I was five.”  Mrs. Merlino plans to enjoy her retirement by volunteering at the animal shelter, relaxing a bit and traveling.  She would like to go back to Spain and Italy, and have an opportunity to visit Ireland and France.  Mrs. Merlino also wishes to see Machu Pichu in Peru, visit Argentina, and Cuba, where her grandfather is from.  She also anticipates spending more time with family and friends, and see things in the United States that she has not seen before.

Mr. Belay

Mr. Michael Belay, Health and PE Department
The Silver Scroll wishes a happy retirement to Mr. Belay!  Teaching for 33 years, 25 of those years at Sterling, Mr. Belay has been a valuable member of Sterling’s Health and PE Department.  Initially, Mr. Belay was inspired to become a teacher through his love of sports and fitness and his desire to stay involved in the field through teaching and coaching young athletes.  Even though he is looking forward to his retirement, Mr. Belay will miss the relationships with his students and colleagues.  However, he will not miss the paperwork!

In his free time, Mr. Belay enjoys golf and baseball.  In fact, one of his fondest Sterling memories is shooting a hole-in-one during the 2011 faculty golf outing.  As encouragement to his students, Mr. Belay reminds them that the “first year is the toughest.  Experience helps you manage situations better.”  He also hopes that students enjoy and savor this times in their lives, while continuing to learn and remain involved.  Although Mr. Belay has had many other jobs outside of teaching, including driving a truck for a moving business, it is his dedication to his job here at Sterling for which he will most be missed!

___________________________________________________________________

While it is unfortunate that these great and influential teachers must retire, we all wish them the best of luck in their retirement. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. However, all of the students and faculty at Sterling hope that in their retirement and this end of teaching, there is a new beginning for our teachers. We sincerely hope they have enjoyed teaching at Sterling High School. Congratulations on your retirements Mrs. White, Mr. Oakley, Mrs. Merlino, and Mr. Belay!

Short Story Selection: "The Unborn"

"The Unborn"
By Amanda Pease

Let’s step away from today and jump into the tale about how four heroes single-handedly saved the human race from a terrifying zombie takeover.
Once upon a nightmare, there came a time in the early 20th century when the world was nearly swallowed up by zombies. Underneath a museum in New York was a safe haven, as of now, for our three heroes: Steve Prefontaine Jr., Doc, and OGB. They weren’t your everyday heroes… they were better.

While they were trying to stay alive, they searched for a different route or something of importance to assist them. During their search, Doc comes across an inscription along the wall. He called Steve and OGB to help him get all the dirt out of the crevices for it to be readable. Doc interpreted the symbols of the ancient Whellerman Rhoob language to the other men. It read, “To one day may come, where all humanity will need a key. It dissembles but remains in London for all to see.” The men have no clue what they’re looking for, but off to London they went.

On their quest, they feel like they were walking forever to find this “key.” The worst part is that they had no idea what it was. Their only clue was that it was in London, dissembling, and out in the open. The heroes decided to have Steve go out running and to search the entire land. OGB and Doc stayed in the woods so Steve would know where to find them.

By midday, Steve came across a knight in shining armor with flowers and moss all over it. He thought this was very strange. Steve thought, “Maybe this is it!” He went to pick up the suit of armor and found out that it was not empty!

Doc and OGB had no idea when Steve was coming back. It was almost time for the sun to fall and the moon to rise. Out of the trees they see two figures coming their way. OGB morphed into a werewolf to find out what was coming their way. Once he reached them, he became very confused. Steve had found the key! In the knight suit was a hippie and her name was Manny Aarp.

She explained who she was and why she was in the suit. The heroes were uneasy with the woman, because they didn’t know whether to believe her or to just flout at her story. She said, “In Russia, is the place to go, the place where fear is all you know. Under control of the Czar is the places of revolters are. All their efforts got, were “no’s,” the size of a lot. The months of nine later, a communist revolution came back only greater. The key is me, to help you find the Czar and see, that the unborn, which is he, will be defeated as humanity may know.”

In the end they chose to give her a chance. When they arrived in Russia they noticed people were everywhere! Where the Unborn was, nobody knew. Doc thought, “If all the people are looking, where isn’t being searched?!” He told the three to find an underground area, of any kind. Manny led them to the forest to find any holes or cave. OGB searched all the area and found a trap that leads to a bunker-like area. They now knew he was there.

The four heroes went to find all the revolters and lead them to the Unborn. He had no idea they were coming, causing him and his family to be unprepared. Little Lenon was the only one who came out of the Czar family alive, on that night in September. Doc couldn’t let a defenseless baby die so he took little Lenon in as a son of his own. Manny and Doc had to finish their job. Doc’s healing powers added with Manny’s nature proclivity was the perfect cocktail to help the world. They took the Unborn’s heart and destroyed it along with all of the souls it had pilfered from the GODs.

All the unrested souls were finally in peace. The four heroes had to part their ways and left Lenon to watch over Russia until he had an heir to take over. Changing the capital to Moscow, he improved it as he planned. Forever in their lives they knew of the three who came and the five that prevailed.

Goodwin Youth Leadership Conference

By Symone Yancey

This year, Sterling High School was able to host the Goodwin Youth Leadership Conference on the Holocaust, Genocide, and 21st century Human Rights violations. This was an event in which students from Sterling High School and St. Joseph High School in Hammonton were able to discuss possible resolutions that would work to encourage tolerance in their environment. As a participant in this conference, I can say that it was very educational and it taught me a lot about the different instances of genocide around the world.

Students discuss the issues.
We began our research weeks in advance, familiarizing ourselves with the issues and understanding the concepts that would be discussed; that way, we would be able to have an informed discussion when it came time for the conference. We chose an instance of genocide and then tried to identify the common features of each and develop statements about how to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The conference began on a high note when Mr. John Gardiner, Assistant Curriculum Director at Sterling High School, received the Axelrod Foundation award for excellence in teaching tolerance. From there, things only got better as the keynote speakers told their inspirational stories; the speakers included Paul Winkler, NJ State Commissioner on Holocaust Education, Mr. Arthur Seltzer, one of the liberators of Dachau, Mrs. Frances Neuman, who was taken at age 10 to Blachamer concentration camp, and Dr. Jerry Ehrlich, who witnessed the genocide in Darfur through his service with Doctors without Borders. They told tales that were terribly sad, but also informative. It is important to know the facts when it comes to these terrible acts so they are not repeated.
Junior JT Harding presents at the conference.

After that, the groups broke up to answer some questions based on Cambodia, the Holocaust, or whichever genocide they chose. The conference concluded with the groups presenting the results from their time together so that by the end of the day we were all well aware of not just the amount of hate in the world around us, but also how we could work to change it.
