Movie Review: Frozen

By Zainab Jaffry, '17

Step into the magical kingdom of Arendelle when you experience the movie that has been causing nationwide buzz since its release on November 27th, 2013. The Disney movie Frozen centers around two sisters, Anna and Elsa, princesses of Arendelle. Anna is the quirky and bubbly younger sister, while Elsa is the mature and collected older sister.

Based on the fairy tale The Snow Queen, Elsa unleashes a secret she has kept hidden her entire life: she has the power to create ice and snow, and soon the mythical land is frozen in an eternal winter. Since the entire kingdom’s people perceive her as a monster, Elsa fears her inevitable doom of imprisonment, or possible annihilation. Thus, sending her spiraling into the deep crevices of wilderness surrounding Arendelle,  isolation seems like the only logical resort to for Elsa to escape the curse she has failed to conceal.

Anna, Princess of Arendelle, then embarks on a dangerous journey into the Scandinavian tundra to retrieve her sister. Anna believes that Elsa has genuine good in her soul, despite the curse. Along the way, Anna meets Kristoff, a hearty mountain man, and his reindeer Sven, whom she teams up with to find Elsa and cease the eternal winter she set off.

Bravery, trust, friendship, sisterhood, love, and optimism are all encompassed in this fantastic Disney film. I believe it deserves as much hype as it has received, for the story displays such important life lessons through a fun outlook on the situation. Frozen sends a truly powerful message across to an audience of all ages. If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, it’s definitely worth watching!
