Sterling's Jazz Band Concert

By Paige Glenn '15

This year was the first year that the jazz band competed and performed at different schools. Mr. Young, the band director, was astounded and flabbergasted of the growth of the band musically in the matter of six months. They met just about everyday from 2:45PM to 4:00PM in the band room (Room 6) for practice. The jazz band learned soloing free-form improvisation, syncopated rhythms and the pulse and meaning of jazz. The band had a high score of Outstanding which is one point away from Superior (the highest score). They received many solo and winds section awards, and they performed “Critical Mass”,”A Child Is Born”, “Carnival”, “Big Dipper”, “Night Train” and “The Chicken”. The jazz band is excited to see what is in store for next year. “Life is a lot like jazz…..it’s best when you improvise.” - George Gershwin
